WebKyphoplasty was designed as a minimally invasive technique to treat osteoporotic fractures and osteolytic tumors of the vertebral bodies. 1 – 4 Kyphoplasty consists of placing a balloon percutaneously into the affected vertebra, inflating and removing the balloon, and then filling the space with acrylic or biological cement. WebKyphoplasty is so named because it often involves the attempt to directly reduce the kyphosis that results from vertebral body collapse. In kyphoplasty, a surgical device or instruments are placed into the broken vertebra and used to reduce the vertebral body collapse towards its original shape.
