(Thunderbird Mac) I have to select those options (View>sort by>threaded and view>threads>expand threads several times during a session and every time Thunderbird is restarted. This failure is critical.

Doesn't change your mails so you can delete it if you are not happy. I have indeed tried it, but only modifies the order of the messages in the reading pane.
